The pump is only one part of the solution.
The right approach depends on where the water comes from, how the weeping tiles connect and where the discharge can safely go. We review the system as a whole instead of treating the pump as an isolated appliance.

Severe weather can interrupt electricity at the same time groundwater is rising. A compatible battery backup can add protection, but it must be selected and maintained for the system.

How much can Toronto subsidize?
For eligible work completed on or after November 12, 2025, Toronto offers up to 80 per cent of invoiced cost, to a maximum of $2,250 for one sump pump, plus up to $300 for a battery backup.
Where should the discharge go?
Toronto advises discharging onto a permeable surface, such as lawn, garden or gravel, at least two metres from the foundation wall, subject to site conditions and local rules.
Does a sump pump stop sewer backup?
No. A sump pump manages groundwater collected by foundation drains. A sewer backup may require a backwater valve or drain repair.
